Why Wiltshire?

The Wiltshire Horn is a hardy, easy-care British meat-sheep breed prized for high fertility, good mothering, large well-muscled frames and lean meat. Both rams and ewes carry horns, and the wool sheds naturally each spring.

Easy care

Because the breed sheds, small flocks avoid the cost and hassle of finding a shearer. Crutching, mulesing, dipping and treatments for lice or fly-strike are also unnecessary — making the Wiltshire Horn a genuinely low-maintenance choice for lifestyle and family farms.

Commercial use

Rams are used as terminal sires over first-cross or Merino ewes to produce prime lambs, and as maternal sires to breed Wiltshire × Merino ewes. Backcrossing these ewes to Wiltshire rams can build a fertile, good-mothering, self-shedding ewe flock that cuts management costs and labour.

Hybrid vigour

As an old, genetically distinct breed, the Wiltshire Horn passes considerable hybrid vigour to its crossbred lambs.

History & character

The breed may have Mediterranean origins and was possibly domesticated by the Romans; its documented British history goes back at least 250 years. Every Wiltshire looks and behaves a little differently, so breeders come to know them as individuals.
